A safety app for women that has been designed for smartwatch use.
Safe and Sound
Overview
We were assigned this project to create six smartwatch UI screens which would showcase any type of content i.e water intake, payments, etc. The goal of this task was to design in a shorter time than we were used to and to get us back into the creative flow of designing.
Research
My research for this project began with mind-mapping ideas of the content I could display. I decided on a safety app, aimed for women which lead me to look at existing safety apps and although there are quite a few, not many are compatible with smart watches.
Sketches
After I conducted my research I moved on to sketching and while I had many ideas that I tried to include, they did not work because of the limited screen size and was overall impracticable. I then simplified my sketches and I was very happy with those so I moved on to making them into wireframes.
Wireframes
I found that wire framing my sketches raised some issues with my initial concepts due to the screen size. Particularly with the size of the typography as I wanted the information to be easily read but the bigger the typography limited the amount of words available on the screen.
Once I was happy with my wireframes I started to create low resolution mockups of the UI. So adding colour, typography and overall, paying closer attention to the design aspect the UI.

Hi-fi mockups
In my hi-fi mockups I was able to bring more life to the designs by including the colour theme. I went for pink and peach as I found them to be calming and reassuring which were important brand values for the safety app.
I also tried to reflect these brand values in the chosen typography which the brand name using a softer and more fun serif font. However, the secondary typeface was more serious and easily read as it was displaying alerts and important information.
